Digital Natives

In the classroom, I related a lot more to my teacher as a digital immigrant than a digital native. It was only in school that I used a computer and at home it was good ol' paper and pencil. My dad was a digital immigrant so at home we did not use computers. I hated when I saw the words "typed" on assignments because that meant I had to find someway to get to a computer.
Now, I am somewhat in between. I like using the computer in terms of research and communicating. But I still love the paperback books and being able to take notes on my paper journal. In education, I think the video games could work, and we do need to adapt to how the students are learning. I know as an education major, there is a class just for that reason called EDLT (Educational Learning Tools) which helps future educators to incorporate technology in the classrooms. Although, I do want my students to have fun in their learning, I want them to enjoy learning itself, not just the video game. So, I hope there can be a healthy balance.

Tech Autobiography

The list of technology that were/are important to me.
  • Phone
  • Nintendo
  • TV
  • Radio
  • Cell Phone
  • Computer

I was thinking about doing a facebook theme for my technology autobiography. Starting with the need for communication. How it went to writing letters to phone, then to e-mail, ultimately leading up to "facebooking". I want to incorporate even how my education in computers (Word, Excel, etc.) has helped me navigate through facebook. I want to put my technology autobiography on my note section of facebook to keep with the theme.

Discourse Community

The discourse community that I am part of is the Starbucks community. I am a barista that have been working there for over two years. Even though there tend to be more women working on our store. I do not think it has a gender role. The logo and because of the service provided could be feminine. However because of the culinary aspect it is also portrayed musculine. So, community as a whole does not have a particular gender roles.
